Botanical Contact Printing / Lampshades

My shades are made with beautiful natural fabrics such as silk, wool or linen that I hand print botanically in my garden studio. Each print is unique. 

 

This process is slow and considered. Before printing, the fabric is scoured and prepared with a mordant to help the pigments in the plants bind with the fabric, ensuring durability. Plants are collected and arranged on the prepared fabric before being rolled tightly in a bundle and steamed. Often natural dyes are also incorporated to create coloured backgrounds. After processing the fabric is washed thoroughly, dried and pressed before I begin designing and making the shade. Many fabrics are also hand stitched at this point. This is an intuitive decision.

 

The shades are made with the highest quality components. Some include a birch ply base. Shades without bases range from $85 AUD to $190 AUD and with bases up to $250 AUD.
